When Bodum took over a small clarinet factory in Normandy in 1982. It was not because of the fine orchestra clarinets they were producing but because of a relatively unknown coffee maker called the Chambord which they, by coincidence, produced as well.
We combined the skills of these Normandy craftsmen with modern production, and the price became affordable to the many people who loved the taste of the coffee brewed in this unique coffee maker, later known as the French press coffee brewer. Thanks to Bodum and thanks to the increasing need for better coffee, the French press coffee maker became one of the most popular coffeemakers in the world. The design has not changed a bit from the original drawings, and we still make the Chambord with the same painstaking care and knowledge we learned from those proud craftsmen in windy Normandy.

All you have to do is pour fresh water in the water container up to hte MAX mark, insert the funnel-shapped filter and fill it with fine ground coffee, tighten the lower and the upper container and put it on the stove, regardless of its type. As the water starts to boil, the steam creates the exact needed pressure to gradually force through the ground coffee beans, reaching the upper container. And voila, your perfect espresso is ready. The flavors from the ground coffee are efficiently extrected resulting in a exceptionally strong and rich brew. The safety valve provides the necessary release if the pressure gets too high, while the silicone gasket ensures a tightly closed unit and allows for pressure to safely build up in the lower section.
The mirror-polished stainless steel construction of the pot features the typical CHAMBORD design. The Santos was to become one of the most popular coffee makers in Scandinavia--to the point where it was said that nearly every household in the region owned one. With the Santos, Bodum was able to solve a number of the problems associated with the vacuum method. The company devised and patented a new type of nylon filter that proved more effective in removing sediment than the cloth and paper filters available at the time, which, unlike the nylon filter, also altered the flavor of coffee. Bodum also solved the pressure problem, patenting a "valve seal" to prevent the Santos from developing too much pressure. The Santos was also one of the first coffee makers that could be used both on the stovetop and on the tabletop--the water chamber was heated with a bunsen type burner and brewing coffee suddenly became a dining spectacle.
